"Of the Creatures who are doomed to perish, to fall": Mythology and Time in Herzog's Apocalyptic, Science Fiction Films

An article I published back in 2011 in the online journal Colloquy. This article was originally a paper I presented at the B for Bad Cinema conference held at Monash University in 2009. In the article I analyse German filmmaker Werner Herzog's films Fata Morgana (1970), Lessons of Darkness (Lektionen in Finsternis) (1992) and The Wild Blue Yonder (2005).

I draw on Elizabeth K. Rosen's (2008) Apocalyptic Transformation: Apocalypse and the Postmodern Imagination in order to discuss how science fiction elements are employed in Herzog's three films. I particularly focus on how these elements are related to mytho-apocalytpic structures of time and what this says about Herzog's view of humanity's future.
