Directory of World Cinema: Germany (2012). Edited by Michelle Langford and published by Intellect.

I review four of Werner Herzog's films in this book (Aguirre, the Wrath of God; Fitzcarraldo; Nosferatu; and Heart of Glass). There are also reviews of other films that were made in the context of the Young and New German Cinemas of the 1960s to early 1980s i.e. the films of Alexander Kluge, Volker Schlöndorff, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Wim Wenders. In addition, the book addresses the cinema of the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) and also some of the key films made during the post-wall, re-unification period i.e. the work of Tom Tykwer. There are essays on the fantastic film, Der Heimatfilm, and individual film pioneers such as Arnold Fanck, who famously collaborated with Leni Riefenstahl on a number of Mountain films (Der Bergfilm).

Finally, the book also has an extensive filmography and list of recommended titles and the Directory of World Cinema: Germany is an excellent introduction to the changes and contrasts that have made-up German national film culture.
